Wellcare Senior Center:A Flock Haven for Filipino American Seniors

Conveniently located along Highway 6 at the boundary between Missouri City, and Sugar Land, Texas, this homey and comfortable place called Wellcare Senior Center provides non-residential day care and health services to seniors and the functionally impaired adults in the community. The facility offers a large outdoor space, multiple recreational and activity rooms, and a quiet rest area to meet a variety of needs.

The Center has a strong mission to support multicultural seniors and their caregivers by providing day activities and health services so families can stay together at home as long as possible. It was built for the purpose of providing the best multicultural day care center in the community. Wellcare Senior Center is a licensed Adult Day Care and Day Activity and Health Service by the Texas Department of Aging and Health Service.

True to its mission, Wellcare Senior Center provides meals and snacks everyday that cater to all of our clients, which include breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks; and on-site nursing care, which includes nursing assessments, personal care assistance, medication management, diabetic glucose monitoring, and blood pressure monitoring. In addition, the Center provides family and senior support through regular meetings with families and our seniors to address issues or concerns to better improve their health and quality of life.

Celebrating its milestones and fruitful years in providing the best care to the senior community, Wellcare Senior Center presented its 5th Year Anniversary with over 200 seniors and guests. It was a day of friendly and festive gathering with fun-filled activities throughout the day. Seniors and their guests were treated with entertainment extravaganza and a feast of food from various Asian cuisines in the beautifully decorated hall of the facility.

The highlights of the event were the Dragon dance, Line dance, Fan Dance, Philippines Dance, Hula (Hawaiian Dance), and Chinese Traditional dance. Musical entertainment highlights were provided by the groups from the Filipino and Chinese performers. The centerpiece of the feast was the famous roasted pig or Filipino Lechon, with scallion chicken, fried jumbo shrimp, broccoli, egg-roll, sesame balls, soups, fresh fruits, and cakes.

Wellcare Senior Center’s activities include morning exercises, arts & crafts, games (bingo, mah-jong, and more), ping pong, billiards, karaoke, tai chi, and gardening. For their senior patrons, the Center offers many opportunities such as celebrating monthly birthday parties, multi-cultural holiday celebration, recreational field trips, bible study, shopping trips, computer classes, and other educational classes. The next event to celebrate in the Center is July 4th Independence Day.
