The all-volunteer organization, which grants stipend scholarships, received a rating of 97/100 from Charity Navigator.
The University of the Philippine Alumni Association in America (UPAAA) received a 97% score for Accountability & Finance from Charity Navigator, which evaluates 200,000-plus, United States-based charitable organizations.
According to Charity Navigator, Accountability & Finance—one of its four "beacons," along with Impact & Measurement, Leadership & Adaptability, Culture & Community—"provides an assessment of a charity's financial health (financial efficiency, sustainability, and trustworthiness) and its commitment to governance practices and policies."
"The four-star rating reflects our best practices," says Dr. Winston C. Umali, UPAAA National President (2024-2025) and a long-time member of its Board of Directors. He notes that the organization's high score for Accountability & Finance (97/100% for FY 2022) reinforces UPAAA's top-of-mind position for U.S.-based donors.
UPAAA grants stipend scholarships (to U.P. students in the Philippines, and alumni-scholars pursuing advanced studies in the U.S.) which help cover board and lodging, Internet access, transportation and books.
Signature fundraisers include a Permanent Endowment Fund (PEF) with a $1M goal (and $200K raised) and the Grand Reunion & Convention (GRC) which takes place next in Houston, Texas in 2025. Ongoing and seasonal campaigns—mostly under the Ways & Means Committee—include UPAAA Fitness Challenge; an online Sari-Sari Store; and UPAAA Giving Tuesdays, among others.
UPAAA currently administers 32 stipend scholarships: 12 are UPAAA-funded, while 20 are donor-funded. Through its Finance and Scholarship committees, UPAAA works with the scholarship offices of U.P. constituent universities (CUs) and alumni foundations to identify recipients, ensure proper disbursement and accounting of funds, and track stipend recipients' progress.
Umali states, "UPAAA is a trusted philanthropy partner for our individual, organization and corporate donors, and a highly effective one for providing direct, immediate and impactful assistance."
