The Magic at Maharlika Gala 2023:Philanthropy At Its Finest

By: Ryan Tejero, Editor-in-Chief

On top of being a sold-out event, the Maharlika Gala on October 7, 2023, became a big hit from start to finish. The members of the board of People Caring for the Community, Inc. (PCCI) delivered the singing of the national anthems and presented a medley of Filipino folk dances. The sit-down dinner was catered and served by the famous Churrasco’s. There was no doubt it was an evening of fun entertainment, superb food, and outstanding philanthropy.

Some highlights of the event this year included the well-applauded dance performances of Dr. Lucy Buencamino and Robert Reese, the silent auction, Filipiniana fashion show, and Houston-based singer Paul Enriquez. The program had no flaws, and the hall was well-decorated. There was really magic on that evening!

Philanthropists made donations toward the building fund of the PCCI. They are Drs. Pete and Cory Talosig ($10,000); Drs. Owen and Loralei Capocyan ($10,000); Dr. Ariel Velasco and Louie Liwag ($10,000); Mr. Ernie and Dr. Norma Mendoza ($10,000), with a pledge of $15,000 for next year; PCCI President Gloria Jorque donated $10,000 to add to her trustee membership; Dr. Lucy Buencamino and Robert Reese ($5,000); new PCCI bronze trustees, Atty. Derick Mendoza ($5000); Dr. Jonas and Floralyn Mendoza ($5000); Marivic Baicy donated $1,000, Dr. Cris and Mrs. Dimafelix from Dallas ($500), Erna Rockwell and Sharon ($1000), and an anonymous donor for $1000.

Philippine Consulate General in Houston, ConGen Jerril Santos said “We are so proud to have the PCCI building in Houston. This is something that we can be proud of. This Center for the Filipino people.”

In her speech, PCCI Chair, Council of Trustees Dr. Norma Mendoza said that “We are so grateful with everyone who came and supported the Maharlika Gala this year. The gala all in all was a resounding success, thanks to the PCCI BOD headed by the very hardworking and energetic President Gloria Jorque and 1st VP Len Calderon, the PCCI COT and all the members and volunteers who supported this event.”

One Philippines Publisher Bhong Zausa stated that “One Philippines will support by reaching out to the community to come and hold their events In the PCCI building. We are so blessed to have a PCCI building that bears our country’s name, Philippines. Using our contacts in various cities in Texas, One Philippines will continue to promote PCCI’s activities for the community.”
