by: Editor-in-Chief Ryan Tejero

It was a one-night musical performance by last year’s featured singer at the Fiesta Ko Sa Texas – Kayla Tejero in Houston. Kayla is a young FilAm, and registered nurse who is based in Chicago, IL and was visiting Houston for the holidays. She has been performing all over Midwest, and mostly for charitable organizations that are raising funds for social causes. The musical event was held on December 27, 2023, and was hosted by Godo’s Restaurant and Bakery. It was dinner a la carte and Kayla started the show promptly at 7PM. The evening’s chilly weather did not stop several music enthusiasts, with most of them having their first-time experience to watch Kayla perform live.

No less than the Philippine Consul General in Houston, ConGen Jerill Santos, graced the event, some were FilAm community leaders and a few nurses from The Medical Center. Kayla’s performance gained positive feedback. Some wanted to see her perform again. Her repertoire consists of songs from Adelle, Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston, Gloria Gaynor to name a few.

One of the nurses in the audience, Rizza Isagan expressed her gratitude to Kayla for coming to Houston and performing to select audience.  She said, “Thank you so much to our sweet, and compassionate singing nurse, Kayla Tejero for spending your paid time off (PTO) flying all the way from Chicago to entertain us during this holiday season. Your singing talent is exceptional. Our intimate group enjoyed your authentic and down-to-earth performance. Thank you for sharing your gift.”

Jocelyn Javier Hernandez, owner of Joy’s Boutique said, “We loved watching her and listening to her beautiful and magnificent voice. She is my idol now. We would love to see her perform again. Great talent and passion of beautiful Kayla. We enjoyed it very much.”

First time to watch Kayla perform was Nurse Mary Ann Teruel Agtual. She said, “What a memorable night indeed. We had a great time listening and watching her sing my favorite songs – beautiful voice. Keep it up Kayla! You reminded me of my uncle Juaning and Auntie Consing from Tigbauan, Iloilo who were great singers. I am looking forward for your bright future, beautiful and talented Kayla.”

Nenie Reyes, who is a physical therapist brought her sister to watch Kayla for the first time performing. She said, “my sister Bernadette was impressed by Kayla’s talent.”

Kayla had received some invites from community organizations in Houston to perform in their events after her performance at Godo’s Restaurant. When interviewed after the show, she said, “I am extremely delighted by the warm reception from the Houston audience. Though smaller in number, I felt instant connection with everyone. Others have been so generous to send me gifts, and I truly appreciate it. It was so refreshing to see everyone enjoying the show. I did not realize that I was singing for an hour, non-stop, until I took a break. Thank you everyone. I am sure I will see you all again next time.”
