By Ryan Tejero

It was a proud moment for the Filipino American community in the South Plains as they were televised in their participation during the July 4th Parade in the streets of Lubbock, TX.

Jonel Villegas who is the President of the Filipino American Association of the South Plains (FAASP) led the group in this year’s participation. He stated that “We made a vibrant appearance during the 4th of July parade. Each organization was only limited to 3 cars. Our theme for this year is Ati-Atihan sa Lubbock. In the last two years before the pandemic, the FAASP has won 2 consecutive awards for the Best in Float in the non-commercial category.”

Jonel added that this year, the group has very limited time to prepare for the competition, but he was happy with the turn-out of the community’s support during the parade.

The event was participated in by the FAASP Officers, Board of Trustees and a number of FAASP members. Participants in the parade displayed a gray t-shirt printed with a colorful ati-atihan design. The group was received by the crowd with enthusiastic applause. The parade was a showcase of diversity and inclusion in the community.

A post-event was held at a private residence to continue with the July 4th celebration, and the successful parade participation of FilAms in Lubbock.
