Beaumont’s FilAm Pride Sachi’s Cakes and Desserts Lab: Inspired by Happiness, Crafted with Love

Nestled in the beautiful city of Beaumont, TX, Sachi’s cakes and Desserts Lab provides a palace of sweet delicacies. Sachi means “happiness” in Japanese. Owned and operated by Cat Altamirano, she said that she named the place after her daughter, Sachi Allegra, who is her life’s happiness, together with their little Angel up in heaven.

Cat reminisced the humble beginnings of Sachi. She said “With my love for the arts, from sketching, costume and craft making, I decided to try my hand in the world of cake artistry. It was love at first sight when I stumbled upon the works of world-renowned Cake Artist and Author, Maggie Austin. I started attending her classes and even traveled to different parts of the globe to study different techniques from different cake artists in the world, which I continually pursue, besides, traveling is one of my life’s greatest moments.”

With the help of social media, friends, and family, Cat have been fortunate enough to continuously grow her specialty cake business in 2017. From a small home-based cake business operating under the Texas Cottage food law, her sleepless nights, hard work, and perseverance led to putting up a storefront in 2020. Considered as one of the toughest years in our generation was the world pandemic, and who would’ve thought that Cat would be able to open the very first Sachi’s Cakes and Desserts Lab in Beaumont, TX.

Sachi’s offer a variety and large selections of desserts from inspired by delicacies from all over the world. Sachi’s unique and special daily offer is of course, Filipino inspired desserts. Since its opening, Cat has always been busy. She said, “You can find us busy with all kinds of bespoke cakes and all the beautiful wedding cakes almost every weekend. And when the schedule permits, we also do high end private caterings on the side.”

Cat had so many inspirations in putting up her business. She recalled, “My boredom caused by moving from one place to another and finding myself jobless, made me decide to put up Sachi’s. From a simple home baking, an unfortunate circumstance happened. My brother got sick and followed by my dad- led me to push harder and work harder. Together with my daughter, they were my driving force. My inspiration is to become better and grow for the best.”

Did she have challenges as a business owner? Cat expressed, “But of course, owning a business is not EASY. We open ourselves to scrutiny, judgments, and criticisms the moment we open our doors. Countless price hikes, inflation, staff concerns, cost of supplies, countless permits, and taxes- the list goes on.”

Cat’s successful business venture is an inspiring story to reflect upon. Her challenges and invested time and resources had given her more courage to sit tight and keep moving. She has a strong message to anybody out there who wants to take a similar business journey in life. She said, “Let’s take our challenges as steppingstones to motivate us in making our wild dreams into reality. Take that leap of faith and believe that you can. As a Filipina immigrant who moved here in 2016, life has never been easy. Losing your father and brother in 8 months, finding out your sister is battling cancer, life moments here and there - you must find that strength inside you to move forward. Never compare yourself to anyone. Don’t compete with others, run your own race, and pave your own path, OWN IT.”

Meet Cat Altamirano and taste Sachi’s Cakes and Desserts at this year’s Fiesta Ko Sa Texas on August 4th at the Bayou Event Center. Cat will bring and showcase her art and passion as a vendor of Fiesta Ko Sa Texas 2024.
